DIGITAL CAMERAS AND MOISTURE

I recently purchased an A40. In the instructions it says its very important to keep the camera away from moisture. I WAS planning to take this camera on a motorcycle trip to Alaska. While it would be protected, Im thinking there will be times when it gets wet, at least a little. So my question is...is this something that can really affect my camera?

I've had film cameras that gave me trouble in cold and moisture, especially in conditions with both. Go to a military surplus store (or, if $ doesn't matter, a camera store), and get a box just big enough for your camera and digital storage card (s!). Put some silica gel in there with the camera. Take it out to use and put it right back in there. If it's very cold out, put that box in the tent with you. Check the lens for condensation when going from cold to warm.
Alternatively, if photos of this trip are that important, get a manual camera on ebay with a good reputation (Pentax MX, Canon TX or TLb, Nikon FM2, Olympus OM) and one of the fantastically cheap 50-mm AND 35 or 28 wide angles, and just keep it in a Zip Lock bag. As much as possible, keep it warm, near your body. You'll just about avoid the moisture issue, as these guys only need a battery for the light meter, and they are unlikely to short out. When you get back, you can have your film scanned onto Photo CD. Sound like the trip of a lifetime. You will want to have photos to show around.
