Which 400mm for bird photography?

Hi, I am from India and I am into bit of bird photography as this helps in my profession as a researcher in Wildlife Science. Currently I am using a Sigma 70-300 f4.5-5.6 APO Macro Super lens, however at the highest end, this lens is quite slow. Aperture 5.6. is not the one that is needed. Also a 400mm lens would be better and I am currently surveying the market for lenses that would fit my budget. Here are my options. Could anyone please suggest about which would be the best choice at the 400 end among the following three combinations. Please remember that I need to take mainly hand-held shots and of birds. Thanks in anticipation.

1. Nikon AF 300 f4 IF-ED + Teleconverter 1.4X
2. Nikon VR 80-400 f4.5-5.6
3. Sigma 400 f5.6 APO HSM
