Softening of lense I am told that camera lenses age, and deteriorate in quality over a period of time. I am also told that there is something called "softening of lenses" wherein a good focus becomes difficult. Could you kindly elaborate upon this? What are the factors causing this? What is the approximate aging time, say, for Canon EOS lenses?

I've actually never heard of this. As a matter of fact I've seen lenses that are decades old that are still remarkably sharp. Some lens can loosen up. My 65mm Sekor lens had to be taken in and tightened up again a few years ago. But none of my other lenses of similar age have had that problem.

I bet it was a camera lens salesman that told you that!! Lenses are ground glass. Dose your bathroom mirror go out of focus after a few years? I think not.
