Opening an Image in PS CS6

I would like to ask a question. I have an HP Pavilion PC with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit operating system.
I use a Canon 60 D camera to shoot.
1. After shooting a bunch of photos I download them into a folder on my computer.
2. I open up the folder using Windows Photo Viewer so I can see all the photos I shot and delete any I don't want.
3. When I want to open a photo in PS CS6 to edit it, I go to the Window Photo Viewer and open the folder, pick which photo I want to edit and right click on it .
4. a menu opens and it gives you a choice of what programs are recommended to open the photo. It says "Choose Program: which I click.
5. It opens a box that has several recommended Programs for you to "Choose the program you want to use to open this file:"
6. There are 5 programs listed, none of which are PS CS6 which used to be listed there...that is the program I want to use to open the file.
7. If I click on the arrow to the right of "Other Programs, there are 5 more programs listed which also do NOT include PS CS6...
8. I click browse to get to the location of Adobe folder which has the PS CS6 and click on PS CS 6. It opens up the folder and I choose "PS CS6" and click on it and click on OK.
9. That does nothing, it does not add it to the list.
MY question is: How do I add the Adobe PS CS6 to the list of recommended Programs to open the file? I have used this method to edit my photos for many years and recently had to replace my hard drive. When I got the computer back, that option has disappeared.

  Hello, Jill,

I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone. I am going through the same problem too. I use PS CS5. I recently purchased a brand new ASUS laptop and had my PS CS5 transferred over to my new computer via the PC Mover software. I am elated that I still have use of my Photoshop program without having to pay for it all over again, but the downside is the problem you described. I cannot right-click on a picture file and select PS to start editing. So I am very interested in seeing if anyone has a solution for you.

In the meantime, I simply open the PS application first and then select the picture file from inside the app. Good luck.

I just learned something new. I had no idea you could right click on the thumbnail in Windows Explorer and choose which program to open it in. I have always just opened what I wanted to edit from CS6. I know habits die hard, but could you both get used to just opening your photos from PS? Also, good to know CS5 worked with a new computer. I have a Windows 8.1 system and know I'll have to upgrade. I will never pay Adobe monthly if I can help it, to the extent of buying a new Windows 7 machine that comes with Windows 10 as well.

My Computer guy solved all the problems. He is my hero! It;s scary moving somewhere new and having to find all new support for everything from dental care, doctors, computer folks...

That's good to hear, Jill. I have good news too. As of a couple of days ago, I am now able to right-click on a picture file and open it directly into PS CS5. I don't know what I did different. But it's working now!

Sharon, I agree with you, paying Adobe monthly for PS, is absolutely ridiculous. Incidentally, don't tell anybody, but after transplanting all the files and programs from my old laptop to my new laptop, it appears I now have PS CS5 working on both computers!
