how do i go about? how do I earn thru photography? i m a student of advertising final year from mumbai india.i had done a course in photography. I am passionate about photography but passion alone cannot satisfy your material needs. i need to know how can I assist someone? what kind of a portfolio is needed? how do I start?

Are you still in Mumbai, or living elsewhere now? Because with the film industry, I know there are hundreds of photographers around who will look for assistants. To assist, I've found here in the States, people like the drive and passion you have for it- they're not expecting someone with a full portfolio, but at the same time, it helps if you've been shooting on your own, and show an interest. Assisting is a great way to actually learn all you need to know about photography. I've called up or written many photographers and asked if they needed an assistant, and they like that I'm studying and know what to do with the equipment- how to handle it. And they've all been very willing to teach me as well. Just ask around. Keep shooting, keep talking to these people. If you really grow as an assistant, it could lead to you getting your own jobs.

Neha, you haven't replied to Sreedevi, so we still don't know where you live. But I would suggest to anyone interesting in learning more about photography, or any subject for that matter. Go to the library [like Hermione, for you Harry Potter fans!]. It is free and there is a wealth of information available to all.Don't forget the video section, also, I've found many instructional tapes on photography there. All of the above will make what you learn with your mentor much more meaningful. Then go take as many photos yourself as you can! That is the best way to apply what you are learning immediately, while it is fresh in your mind. And let us know how you are doing!
