Can Someone Explain E-TTL to me

I am soooo new at this. Could someone please explain E-TTL to me in terms that I can understand. Also, I would love to hear from anyone out there that might have a Canon Elan 7E. I am doing more and more experimenting with mine and I think I'm confusing myself more and more.
Thanks

Regular TTL (through the lens) meters off the film while the shutter is open to determine when the flash has provided proper exposure and shut it off. This metering is relatively simple (4-segment/3-zone in late model EOS cameras).

E-TTL uses a low-power pre-flash before the shutter opens that is measured by the 35-zone evaluative meter to determine the proper flash power to use when the shutter actually opens.

http://bobatkins.photo.net/info/faq30/flashfaq.htm explains E-TTL as used with the Elan II, but applies to all E-TTL EOS cameras.

Canon also publishes a brochure called "Flash Work" that explains how to use EX series speedlights. It can be obtained from a dealer, or can be viewed online at
