Photography Question

Tom G. Smith

Gotta start somewhere.

I've been offered a chance to possibly have some of my pictures published in a magazine. The publisher has offered me credits of name, phone number and email in exchange for use of the pics. I realize in order to be taken seriously, I need to get published. And I'm agreeable to this as the magazine isn't very large or well known. I also know that I need to submit a standard contract of terms of useage as well. My question is, do I send this contract to them with the photos? before the photos, but with a contact sheet of proofs? Thanks in advance for the help.

Sounds like the magazine is trying to get a deal. I urge you not to give them the shots. They are just hoping to get use of you shots for free. Not only should you charge them for yourself but you should charge them on behalf of every other stock photographer out there who is trying to make a living. You're not doing anybody any favors by giving your photos away. Negotiate a fair price before you send them the images. There are books on the market that list average prices for stock photos.

Thanks for the input Jeff, but due to lack of cooperation from the events coordinators and the lack of any organization on their part...(there was no press check in booth, no info office, nothing), and my lack of being fluent in spanish, I couldn't get release forms signed and was told they didn't have time to translate for me. So, the few shots I did take are useless due to the lack of releases. I won't be giving anything away, from here on out, in fact I won't be dealing with this magazine anymore...I'm going to stick to the english speaking community. Thanks again for your input.
