Picking my first SLR 35mm

I am looking to purchase the Nikon n65 camera with the 28-80mm lens. I have heard that this is a good choice for the aspiring photographer. Any opinions or ideas?
Thanks a lot.

Get one of the excellent Nikon 50-mm lenses and learn to use it well. You will have sharpness as good as any in the industry and no distortion at the edges. If you want a zoom later, try a telephoto range zoom, such as a 70-200. If you MUST have a zoom now, go a step or two higher than the mediocre zoom that comes with the camera. You get what you pay for.

Not sure how these things come bundled in the States, but in the UK the difference in price between an F65 body only or bundled with the 28-80 (old) or 28-100 (new) zoom is negligible.

You mentioned that you were an aspiring photographer.... Stick with the zoom you get with the camera. I'm an amateur too and like the results I get with my 28-100. Sure, if I want to make poster size prints or earn any money from my photography in the future I'll buy a more expensive lens. In the meantime my lens allows me to get a lot more creative with my composition than I ever used to be with quality that's fine at the price.
