TOKINA 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon I shoot with a prehistoric, lol, Nikon D40 DSLR and currently the widest lens that I have, is the 18-55mm Nikor that came with the camera. I like to shoot any and all subjects that grabs my attention and I don't have a particular shooting style, a quick look at my gallery will confirm this. Now I want to get into the realm of the Ultra Wide. After doing my own research on the net, I am seriously considering buying this lens, and SOON. Will very much appreciate any feedback, specially negative/flaws/problems, from anyone who either has used this Tokina or knows about it. Thanks in advance for your time. UB.

Hi Usman, I've been eyeing on Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 lens for some time even though I use Canon. I've read magazines and online reviews. Mostly it got good reviews. Currently I'm using Tokina 12-24mm. It's been serving me very well with a good quality. Tokina 11-16mm is a lot faster and supposed to be a lot better image quality-wise. Many reviews say so. I think it's an ideal (if not the most) lens for a crop sensor to go super wide. The only thing that makes me hesitate is that I'm thinking of upgrading my camera to a full frame sometime this year. If not, I'd buy this lens right now.

Hi Usman, I own the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 lens and I think it's great. The build quality is excellent and it just feels good to hold in your hand. There is slight falloff of light in the corners at 11mm but easily fixed in photoshop...the same thing with objects tilting inward because of the wide angle distortion. What I do is to frame my shot then take two steps back and shoot...then when I fix the tilting I'm back to my original comp. If you plan on going to a full size sensor, don't buy it you'll end up with cropped photos. If you go to my gallery and click on page 19...the photo of St. Patricks is the first photo I ever shot with that lens. You won't regret buying it. Nick

Thanks Alex and Nick for some useful info on the Tokina. Both of you have cautioned me against buying this lens if I plan on going full frame, which is fine with me as I am not looking to go full frame anytime soon. I am almost ready to get this lens unless someone chimes in with some negative aspects of the lens. Would still love to know any good Camera Shops in Singapore though. I will be asking my friend to buy me one who is leaving for Singapore in a day or two and he does not know anything about photography. Nick that’s one neat trick of avoiding soft corners/distortions, never thought of that, cool. And that St. Patrick’s shot is exactly the wide-angle feel I am looking to achieve with this lens. Any recommendations/preferences on a ND or GND filters that you might have used on this lens? UB.

Hi Usman, I heard that camera gears are more expensive in Singapore than the U.S. You'd better be careful not to be ripped. For GND, I use Lee filters. You can trust their high quality.

Thanks Alex. I am currently living in Pakistan and can't get the US prices as such. The extra international shipping, duties and taxes makes the price twice as much landed here in Pakistan. And there are no good camera shops to buy decent equipment from, at least not in Islamabad! UB.

Oh YES, I did, Patti. The Tokina is very nice, well built and works like a charm. And I have started to love it. Composition is a bit challenging initially, as with any UWA lens, but gradually one gets the hang of it. My camera does not have a built-in motor so I only focus manually, which again is not a big problem with UWAs.
