There are three recommended places. One on each coast and one in the middle of the country. Unfortunately I do not remember the one in the middle, but all three are in the same price range for rentals. Their service is great.

East Coast: lensrentals.com
West Coast: borrowlenses.com
Middle: ??? Perhaps someone will pick up my slack on this one.

In case there is a camera store near you that rents equipment be sure to check these on line places for prices so you can make a comparison Also, purchase the insurance. I would hate to damage a lens and have to pay for it especially if I wasn't happy with it.

They also rent cameras but the price for doing so is rather high. But if you are thinking of buying a Leica M9, a Nikon 3Ds, Canon 1D MarkIV, or any other expensive camera it would be worth it to test before you purchase. You may decide that it is not the camera for you.

Due get the insurance and consider a place locally if you have one where you can look at the lens before you take it home and show the condition of the lens when you bring it back.
I put a link to an article in a question that would be too hard to find now, about a photographer that was asked to do some testing of a new lens. Very expensive one. Sent it back in the same condition that he got it. People who asked him to try it out then tried to say that he damaged it. Screwed up his credit for a while.

Okay, wasn't hard to find, and it was a little different situation, but still relative. It's from a photographers blog. Somebody who's done stuff for Harper's Bazaar, other fashion mags. Here's what I found...

"A Florida based camera dealer. whose ads run in Shutterbug, and from whom I had bought thousands of dollars worth of equipment, insisted on sending me the (used) lens to "try." I returned it to him in the same condition (excellent) in which I received it. Then he sued me for not buying the lens.

Because of work I could not fly to Florida for the trial, and I ended up paying the full price of the lens, but receiving nothing. In spite of my settling the lawsuit by paying for the lens, the courts erroneously entered a judgment against me, which subsequently affected my credit rating.

There is no free lunch. "

I don't know of any rental places, but I do know that Amazon.com sells all kinds of camera gear at a very good discount.
