upgrading digital camera

I have been using a small Canon powershot Elph to learn the basics of digital photography. I would now like to buy a more advanced camera to continue learning photography in more depth. I cannot afford a DSLR. I would like any recommendations for a versatile camera which is easy for a beginner to use in a price range around $500.00 or so. I was considering the Canon Powershot G12,but read that the shutter release was too long. Anyone have experience with it? I also read about the Olympus Pen-E-PL2 and would like to hear from anyone who's used that camera. Really there are so many models of cameras on the market, I've become overwhelmed. I would welcome anyone's suggestions about a good camera to learn on. I had a film SLR camera previously, but feel I am starting over again in learning photography on a digital camera.

  Hello Susan,
I would search for a used Canon 40D or Rebel on your local Craigslist. I usually find quite a few deals and being local, you can inspect the camera before buying. I have bought & sold a few cameras & lenses and have never been disappointed or burned but do not go for any deal that involves mailing or a situation that you cant meet in person & inspect the camera.

my .02,
Carlton
