Looking to buy new flash

I am looking to purchase a new flash...does anyone have any suggestions for a comparable model to the Canon 430 EX??
I shoot with a Canon 7D.

Appreciate any feedback!

Thanks

Hi Mindy, The Canon 430EX II Speedlight would be an excellent choice but if you want to check out other brands, Sigma and Metz are full-featured and highly rated.

Both companies make flash units that are compatible with most of the features of the EOS 7D. They are also more affordable than a comparable Canon flash unit. Check out the following:

Sigma EF610 DG Super Flash for Canon DSLR Cameras (large, powerful, full-featured about $260 in the US)

Metz mecablitz 50 AF-1 TTL Shoe Mount Flash for Canon DSLR (Similar, about $235)

Of course, the Canon 430EX II is not much more expensive (about $320). It's not quite as powerful as the Sigma and Metz models but it's excellent in all respects.

You can also find other brands of flash units that are a lot more affordable but I have no experience with those: Bower and Sunpak. Before buying one look for Test Reports and confirm the unit is fully compatible with the latest Canon DSLRs.

Cheers!

Peter

  Hello Mindy,
I would start with the 580EX and then if you decide to add another like a 430EX, you can use the 580 as a master & the 430 as a slave. The 430 cant be used to trigger other flashes. I have this setup and also use the STE2 transmitter to trigger both flashes when I need to have both flashes away from the camera. I also suggest subscribing to Strobist dot com as they have a ton in information about flash photography and offer lots of tips & tricks and done with a sense of humor.
I also took Paul Gero's wedding course and he talks in length about how to use flashes most efficiently to get the rusults you want.
I bought an off-brand (ProMaster) macro ring flash and it has a design problem in that the power switch is easily switched ON like when I am placing it back in my backpack and then it drains the batteries so I have to remove the batteries when I am done using it for the day.
my .02,
Carlton
