How to operate my Elan 7e

I just bought a Canon Elan 7e and for some reason the only mode it will work in is in the autofocus action setting with multple frames per second. In The other modes it closes the shutter but does not reopen and does not advance the film. I have looked at every custom option and they are all normal, I have replaced the batteries twice thinking the multiple frames were killing the battery but that is not it. What do you suggest I do?

Your symptoms sound very much like a lens incompatibility, especially Sigma. The electronic connections and functions of Canon's EF lens mount are reverse-engineered by third party lens makers, and they don't always get it 100% right. When Canon introduces a new model, some third party lenses that were ok with earlier generation EOS cameras fail with the latest version. The typical sympton is the mirror locking up and the battery-low signal flashing. The maker of the lens will sometimes upgrade it for the cost of shipping only.

At Sigma's website they have a FAQ regarding the Elan 7 and Rebel 2000:

Q: Are Sigma lenses compatible with my new Canon Elan 7 camera? The Rebel 2000?

A: All current production Sigma lenses for Canon autofocus cameras are fully compatible with the new Elan 7 camera. This includes all HSM type lenses. Some earlier production non-HSM lenses may require modification in order to perform normally with the new camera. If you have a question about a particular lens, please contact Sigma's service department (in the U.S.) at (631) 585-1144 or via email at info@sigmaphoto.com.
