Photography Question

Lorri Shane

how to charge for use of photo on a website

A dentist who is new in town has contacted me and asked how much I would charge to let him use one of my photos on his new business website OR purchase the rights to this photo. How much is a reasonable charge for this and does a contract need to be drawn up? I would think so. I've not had this come up before. Thanks!

Given what it costs to go to the dentist these days (even WITH insurance), think I'd ask him to clean my teeth a couple of times over the next year in exchange for use of my photo -- and I'm only half joking!

I've done this several times for website owners, however never for a dentist. Realtors, restaurants and small business has been my regular clients.

I would NOT sell the rights to the photo!!! No No NO.

I would sell them a low resolution version (for web only) for $25.00 to use for a specified length of time. I usually allow for a full year for that dollar amount. By this time the website owners usually want to make changes. If they wish for longer, negotiate a price. Hard to go too steep being its not being mounted on a wall. Im sure they would hesitate at anything close to $100.00 for any length of time.

Also, you MUST have full photo credit. Adds to your search engine resume. I have done package deals using multiple photos, allowing them to cut/slice whatever for use as website banners etc..

  Hi Lorri,
You can sell usage rights which will allow him to use a photo at a specific size for "x" amount of brochures & time. I would guess about $500 to $600 for an interior brochure photo up to 5000 prints for a year.
Sign up at Corbis.com and look at Jim Zuckerman or other photographers work and see what is compatible to your work and what they are selling for. Select a photo and the calculator icon to get the usage rights prices.
Hope this helps.
Carlton

  Hi Lorri,
For online (web, email or mobile device) I think $100 a year for low res and maybe $200 a year for medium res and as Thomas suggested, make sure you are credited for the displayed image.
Cheers,
Carlton
