Photography Question

Jessica Baily

upgrading my camera

I want to buy a new camera so that I can take the next step in my photography career. Seeing as how there are so many good photographers on here, I was wanting to know a few of the best camera's out there just to narrow my search for the perfect camers. I plan on shooting both studio and outdoor photos. Any suggestions?

  Jessica,

To get a better response instead of everyone telling you what they are using, we need to have more information.

1. What camera are you using now. Also how much photography have you done.

2. What isn't your camera capeable of doing that you want to come out better.

3. If you say "I want to take everything!", then we can recommend a good general purpose camera. If you are new to DSLRs then we will inform you of less expensive cameras to learn with. After you lhave taken 10,000 pictures or more (no joke) you will have areas that you seem to enjoy more than others and want something that is better suited for you.

4. There is no such thing as the "perfect camera." And the one that may seem perfect for you may be very uncomfortable for YOU to use in which case you will use it less. The camera must be comfortable for you.

Now if you can fill in some of the blanks we will be able to be of better assistance.

Lynn

Hello Jessica,
The perfect camera for me is the Canon 5D mk II - it is a full frame camera and I have several L lenses since the glass is more important than the camera. the 5D2 is 21mp (which will require buying a couple of external hard drives because the images will eat a lot of space quickly. I also bought some 8GB & 16GB CF cards for the same reason. I have a 40D as well and use that for my long lenses when I need a bit more reach but I shoot 90% with the 5D2. I'll include a photo so that you can click on the camera info that will take you to the reviews and you can read more info about it. I also have an older 1DS but it weighs a ton.
The included photo is of an acrobat suspended in the air by a dozen large balloons and she is about 30 feet high. Notice the short DOF (f/3.5) and high ISO 4000 and it is sharp with no noise.
Click on the SCI-HH to see all the photos :)

SCI-HH

Cheers,
Carlton

  Hi Lynn and Carlton.
I want to change/upgrade my camera as well.
Lynn, I have a Panasonic FZ50 and the only two lenses you can get for it.
I love doing pet/wildlife photography, flowers, children, portraits and macro. I love natural light and get frustrated because hight ISO = noise! Or can't reach it.

I have been looking at the Canon 50D and lately at the 5D.Here(Sydney) there is minimun $AU 1,000 difference in price
I have been reading reviews and commets and really don't know which one.

Carlton,I have read some of your posts before and you said the same about "the glass is more important than the camera"
With what i'll pay for 5D body I could buy 50D Kit.Maybe I should go for the cheaper body, otherwise keep saving!
I'll appreciate your thoughts about it.
You can see some of my photos in www.anniehanley.com

Do you also want to shoot video. If you do now, or think you will in the future, then take that into consideration now.

I just purchased the Canon T21 (550D) because I want to be able to shoot both video and still photos. I bought a package that included 2 lenses, 18-55 and 55-250. These are not top of the line lenses, but are very good value. In the future, as money becomes available, I will likely look for a better lense. But meantime, I have lenses that enable me to shoot close up and distant objects/scenes.

If you are sure you never want to shoot video, you can get a Canon T1i for a very good price.

Well, there seems to be a lot of Canons on here :=). So, I got to throw in a Nikon. I just upgraded a couple of months ago from a D200 to a D700. I could not be more pleased. I have shot photos at 6400 with no noise. It is a full frame as well. I do only nature photography and wanted a camera that could hold up well to outside conditions. This camera is extremely well suited for this. I must admit the canons are good too. I have just been using Nikons for 35 years and a little biased in that direction. I recommend you look at the reviews online for all the cameras mentioned. You can also find comparisons. Good luck
