Canon 50d Lens

I have a Canon 50D and want a wide angle lens. My budget is very limited. Do you have any advice for me on which would be the best budget friendly wide angle lens.

28mm is common starting point. Usually lower priced than anything wider, has good wide angle characteristics, maybe will give more than a 35mm because for some people and some things, a 35mm may not be quite wide enough.
You can check online for Canon, Tamron, Tokina, Sigma, for what ever is in your price range. Check regular, single focal length lenses as well as zooms that include those focal length. Zooms will cost more, but there may be some that you like.

  Carolyn,

A lot will depend on just how wide you want to go. Anything wider than 17mm for you camera becomes more than budget priced. If you do not have the EF-S 18-55 or the EF-S 17-85 I would recommend them. Beyond that they are rather spendy but I did find a Sigma that goes from 12-24(I think), that I purchased for a friend and is available for around $600. It will come with an EF mount so if eventually you go to a full frame camera it will be useable. I also recommend that you check out KEH.com for used lenses. Their ratings are very low for what you get. One rated as Ex- will look more like a very slightly used new lens. Their pricing is better than fair for what you get.

Hello Carolyn,
Since the 50D has a 1.6 cropped APS-C sensor, 17mm is really equal to 26mm so you are not getting as wide as you think. I have the 17-40mm f/4L lens but borrowed my friends Canon 10-22mm lens for a trip to Europe when I was shooting with the 40D. I think the 10-22 is every bit as sharp as my 17-40 L lens and is less $$. I highly recommend it and if I wasn't shooting on a full frame now, I would buy it myself :)
This image was shot with the 10-22mm on that Europe trip.
Cheers, Carlton
