Canon 77mm CPL quality?

Hi

I am wondering if anyone has used Canon 77mm polarizing filter?

Please give your opinion/feedback about the quality of original Canon polarizing filter.

I am getting that at a good price, but dont know anything about its quality.

Cheers
Kapil

  Hello Kapil,
I have not used the Canon polarizing filter but I do have a B&W Kaeseman 77mm circular polarizer which I paid $175 for. My thought about any filter being placed over my L lenses is that I dont want to use an inferior optic on my quality lenses. The Canon may be a very good filter and the reviews on B&H are positive - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/12323-REG/Canon_2583A002_2583A002_77mm_Circular_Polarizing.html#reviews

I am looking to get one of the Singh Ray filters soon but these are closer to $400 - http://www.singh-ray.com/

Cheers,
Carlton

  Hi Carlton

Thanks for your advise.

I was thinking of singh ray as well but the price difference is huge.

In continuation to that.... is CPL+warming filter a good option? Considering the fact that warming filters can be easily applied in PS, is it worth spending $400 on CPL+warm?

I believe as you do Kapil in that warming & cooling filters can be duplicated in PS but ND & Circular Polarizers are harder to mimic - I shoot a lot of waterfall & landscapes that a CP works well with cutting down the reflections on the water and allowing a bit more detail with slower shutter speeds.
My B&W is very good, I suspect the Canon version is of good quality as well and the Singh Ray will have to wait till I have extra $$ laying around (if that ever happens) lol...

  Hi Carlton

I need some more advise regarding this before buying it.

Is it feasible/advisable to put a 77 mm screw in polarizer (from B+W/Canon etc) and then put a Cokin ZPro holder over it for Grad ND filters??

Is it manageable to move polarizer and also set Grad ND in this type of setup?

Please advise.

  Hi, Kapil,

It can be done -- I just tried it with a B&W polarizer and Lee filter system.

The polarizer can only be adjusted with the ND filter off the holder.

Can't think of anything that would effect image quality other than extra glass in front of the 'glass'.
