Looking for a low-priced, medium tele-photo lense

Hi, I'm looking to buy my first telephoto lense. Are there any low-priced, but decent quality lenses out there? I'm looking for something in the 200 to 300 maximum focal length range. Also, I have a Canon EOS Rebel 2000, would any of the Sigma or Tamron lenses be compatible with my camera? Thank you.

Steer clear of the cheapest 70-300 or 100-300 zooms with maximum aperture less than f/5.6. The Rebel 2000 needs at least f/5.6 to autofocus reliably. For example a 100-300 f/4.5-6.3 would not be recommended.

Canon's EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 USM III is a good choice, for a little more the EF 100-300 f/4.5-5.6 USM has better build quality, non-rotating front element, and ring-USM with full-time manual focus. The EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 USM IS has Image Stabilization, but is over $400.

Tamron's 70-300 f/4-5.6 LD and Sigma's 70-300 f/4-5.6 APO are both well regarded and reasonably priced.

If you're buying used, older Sigma lenses sometimes are incompatible with newer Canon bodies, but Sigma will update the electronics (and clean the lens) for the cost of shipping only.
