Photography Question

How To Achieve My Goal

Everyone has their own goal in photography weither it be doing portrait work or shooting high fashion models. My goal someday is to teach! I really love inspiring and teaching people what I know about photography. I of course have much more to learn, but am wondering the best way to go about finding a path for this journey! I'm currently just starting to do portrait work because I really enjoy capturing special moments for people as well! I'm a people person...what can I say? :~)

Hi Aimee. Somehow I've developed a small following of people that have, like us, discovered photography and want to learn more. Basic stuff, like an introduction to "M",lol. It's all word of mouth and some times I have to limit attendance. I shoot with working models. I still shoot them at no charge, because I realize that with their experience they know what they like. They usually know a good photograph from a bad one right away. After all, they are involved in more shoots than many photographers are, making them excellent at critiques, oh and sometimes a bit demanding, lol, also good training for a photographer.

Anyhow, after years of shooting industry participants for fun and education, I've now found myself being occasionally referred to as a fashion photographer. That in turn helps my mom and pop family portrait income, and is producing more and more product and fashion gigs, also from within the industry.

I didn't plan any of this. My original Business Plan is way off in left field compared to what actually resulted. So just keep having fun, keep networking, keep thinking, and you'll suddenly discover who you are as a photographer.

And don't be surprised if it's a "niche" others (clients) will decide for you. Just smile and say thank you when booking their shoot.

Good Luck. Although with the quality of your images, and a seemingly pleasant personality, your photographic future's pretty much already assured.

just like teaching any subject, nothing beats education. Learn, learn and learn. Take classes on teaching, not just on photography.

  Aimee,
If you have a camera club in your area, become active and offer to teach some basic classes. Though not usually paying gigs, this will give you an opportunity to develop your teaching style and also get over the out in public heebee jeebies that go with putting yourself out there. Clubs are always looking for speakers etc. and it might help you to make some additional contacts leading to paid jobs.
Just a thought.
Taking some teaching courses as Dennis suggested will certainly be useful as well.
Jeff

Wow...thanks to all of your for your thoughts and suggestions on this!

Maverick I thank you for your lengthy comment. I will keep an open mind to my future in photography. The truth is that I never thought I would be doing portraits in my life and here I am!

Dennis...I never thought of taking classes on teaching. Guess I'm going to have to book alot of portrait sessions just to get the money to take classes! I'm currently a stay at home mom of 3 so I don't have extra cash for that yet. Thanks! :~)

Jeffrey...I wish there was a local camera club, but I have not found it in my area. Other side of the state there are some. I had thought about launching on on meetup.com for this area, but that is a daunting task and not fitting into my plan at this point in my life! Honestly I'm not ready to teach right now. I don't have the knowlege yet. Just was wondering how to achieve that goal in the future! :~) Thanks!

  Aimee,
I'm in eastern PA and have 4 excellent clubs within 25 miles, guess I'm lucky in that regard.
I did a quick look at the Photographic Society Homepage for Camera clubs in PA. Following is a list of what I found. I've edited out the eastern PA clubs for the sake of space. Hopefully there is one near you, the knowledge you pick up by being a member is worth the $20 or 25/yr membership fee many times over.

Indiana

Johnstown
Greater Johnstown Camera Club

New Castle

New Wilmington

Thanks Jeff the info junkie! :~) I live near the Burgh so I'll have to look up that JCC Camera Club and see what it's about.
