  try practicing with sunlight , either out side or sunlight coming thru a window inside, until you can get a flash that you can aim in different directions so you can bounce off the ceiling or a wall.
Try poses that aren't so posey.

  I agree with Gregory, (I need critiques myself) but your shots are quite bright, washes out the natural skin tones and makes the pictures too cold. I have the same camera and I recommend the Canon 580EX II speedlight.. (there are a couple models that will do fine for you and your application) but you will be able to use Gregory's suggestion of turning it to point in different directions and get better flash bounce which will not wash out your subjects so much. Play with our differnt ISO settings, if it's set too high then the flash will work harder providing more light to your subjects .. even more washout. . .
