slide/film scanner

Any suggestions on a good scanner? I have loads of slides and negatives I would like to scan and save to disc, and I'd rather buy than pay a photo shop to do it. Plus, I still use my film camera, and would use it more if I had a scanner.

Thanks for any information!
Diane

  Diane,

I have been using a Nikon Coolscan V for about a year. I find that it does a great job. Most of the photos on my website where scanned with this.

You won't get the fine detail with any flatbed that you'd get with the Coolscan V, but the Epson V700 will let you scan 12 slides or 24 negative frames at a time. The quality will be fine, if you won't be enlarging over about an 8 x 10, and if you need to do the job quickly. Plus you'd have an excellent home office flatbed for documents and prints.

A caveat about scanning film:
The dust spot cleanup function on any scanner will not work with Kodachrome slides or with silver-based B&W film. You must clean your film as best you can and go after the remaining dust spots one at a time in your imaging software.

  Hi
If you want the one of the best that money can buy then the Nikon scanners are it. If you want a more economical one then the Minoltas are good also.
