Digital or Film Up grading delema. I have been shooting film for a few years, both manual and auto equipment. I am shooting primarily animals and nature as well as old cars and some fine art. Black and white is my first love, (after my wife and kids), but color is required by some clients also. In the future I would like to get into weddings on a steady schedule. I have photo shop 7 but after checking around I think that I will NOT print my own stuff. Just not economical at this point. I have firmly decided on Canon and L glass. Here's the dellema. Do I get a EOS-IVhs or go digital with a EOS-IDS Mark II. If digital then would a EOS-ID Mark IIN be good enough. I have had better results extracting an image from a scanned print then from my wifes 4mpx point and shoot but understand that the camera quality is lacking. I am not concerned about price of the body, rather the best for the dollar spent. Any and all advice appreciated.

If you had left out the comment about B&W being your first love, I would say it is really a matter of choice. I prefer film and others prefer digital. Each has its adcantages and disadvantages. However, you will not get the same results in B&W with digital that you will with film. Digital just hasn't gotten there yet.

If you're really into B&W, consider medium format, and developing your own film. MF cameras and lenses are a bargain compared to what they used to cost. There are reasonably priced flatbed scanners that will scan silver-based B&W beautifully, if you don't want to go the enlarger and chemicals route. I don't think digital is completely "there" yet , either. Until it gets there at a price I can afford, I'd just as well scan film.

Thanks. That's kind of what I thought about digital black and white also. I used to have my own darkroom but sold it due to a lack of space. I had good results even with 35mm film. I think the quality now is as good as medium format. Any one elses opinion on my delema digital or film is welcomed.

Comparing medium format film to dSLR digital is a little on the order of apples and oranges. MF ought to be better... but in actuality the new 12 to 16 MP dSLRs are just about equivalent in image quality (not quite as good resolution, much less grain), and end up looking BETTER until you start making really big enlargements. Re B&W versus color, some cameras do great black and white. Resolution is the key here, at least 8 MP... or a Foveon-equipped camera (Sigma SD10). If I were you and I was making the decision and I was a Canon fan, I'd go with the new 5D (12 MP FF) dSLR. The Nikon D2x is another good choice. Pick the body based upon the lenses you like and your B&W images will exceed anything you can get from 35mm.
