Flash for Wide Angle Lens

Previously, I have tried by adjusting the zoom difuser to 28mm (widest in most flash) and the flash fill cannot cover the field of view of the picture. How can I take good photo with flash with a wide angle lense, say 21mm?

How can I properly measure with a centre-weighted built-in light meter while taking photo with a wide angle lens in composition with various lighting conditions?

Most flash units require an external diffuser to get light dispersed to wider than a 24mm lens. There are aftermarket diffusion boxes and panels that will work for this. Usually they're advertised for softening the harshness of flash use for subject material such as portraiture, but they will also widen coverage. Without one, if you can tilt the flash head, and have a suitable ceiling low enough and white enough, you can use bounce to fill the area.

When using an external diffusion panel or box, or when bouncing, you will lose from 1-2 stops (or more) of light from the flash due to the dispersion and absorption. Using a dedicated flash with output that the camera can control helps greatly, but also remember your range for a given aperture is reduced too.

Assuming you're talking about an SLR's TTL (through-the-lens) center-weighted metering, I've never worried about it when using super-wide lenses (including an 18mm). With any focal length from that up to a 600mm telephoto, I do evaluate overall contrast for potential problems. This is the range of highest highlight to lowest deep shadow in which some level of detail is desired. Usually it's not a problem unless what I'm really after is subject material in strong highlight or deep shadow. On the rare occasions when it is, a decision is made on what image detail to give up and what to keep (highlight or shadow) with exposure adjusted accordingly . . . or bracketed with several shots.
