2x Converters

Hi

Do it's recomended to use a 2x, 4 element converter with a 28-200 Tamaron lense, if so what would be the result. Please advise.

Thank You

Certainly you can use a TC with a zoom lens. If the zoom lens is of high enough quality you shouldn't have too much of a loss of sharpness. TC's do tend to perform better on prime lenses than zooms though. It all depends on how much sharpness you are willing to tollerate, as well as how much slower the resulting lens will be.

Wait!!! Before you buy the TC, there's one more thing to think about - What's the maximum aperture now, and can I tolerate the maximum aperture once the 2x TC is on it (IE two stops under)

As a generalisation, if the effective maximum aperture of the lens is less than 5.6 then low light auto focusing is slow and difficult... Get it to f/11 and you can forget using auto-focusing all together. Are you okay with that? Also, don't forget that if the screen isn't bright, it might be harder for you to focus manually.

  Hi Ken.

Thank u for the reply.
The lense is Tamaron 28-200AF f/3.8-5.6. and I have a couple of questions for both of you. ( Jim / Ken )

1. I don't mind manual focusing but I,am a bit conserned about the sharpnes with the 2x. (ie. for 8x10 enlargment ).

2. What will be the effect to the sharpness when using a fast film with the converter (ie. 200ASA )

3. what do u think about the quality of my lense.

4. What converter do u recomend Tamaron or Sigma

Regards,

Rohan

  Hi Rohan,

With the 2x TC on it, your effective aperture will be f/11 (f5.6 +2 stops) with the depth of field half that of a prime f/5.6 lens. This will make autofocusing impossible, and manual focusing possibly difficult since the image is not as bright on your view finder. Also at 400mm f/11, even a reasonably high speed film will need a tripod (Since you need 1/500th of second to keep it stable)

1) I can't answer this one authoratively, but I can answer it experientially - I took a photo a few weeks ago with a Tamron 2x TC (Pro version) on a Canon 70-200 f/2.8L. At 400mm f/5.6 at a range of about 1m, I was able to fill the frame with an eye and the edge of a nose (about 5cm). The image was so sharp, you could see every eyelash, every pore in his skin.

Theoretically, every piece of glass you put between you and the source of light is going to add distortion and lose sharpness. However, as I found out with this particular photo, if you start off with a good lens, this should not be noticeable.

2) See above. Regardless of speed of the film, the sharpness will be slightly decreased, once again, if you get a good TC, this will probably not be noticeable.

3) See what some other people have written about it :) http://www.photographyreview.com/reviews/35mm_zoom_lenses/product_6257.php

4) I am happy with my Pro Tamron TC, especially since it was a third of the price of the Canon genuine. I haven't used Sigma, so I can't comment.

Maybe you could ask the shop to shoot half a roll each in your camera to try it out and see which one you are happier with.

Hope this helps.

Ken
