putting color to a black and white photo

I have a photo that is very old and its black and white. Its a postcard that was printed 100 ago and I have seen how they take the old photos and put color into them. I have a high resolution scanner and scanned the photo with no problem. I also have many types of software such as Paint shop pro 9, Photoshop cs, painter 8, elements 2 and so on but have no idea which one of this programs will allow me to put color into the photo. Is there a course that show you how to do this. If there is I will like to take it.

Depending on how 'perfect' you want this image to look. Probably the easiest way to do this task (that I know of, and use myself) is to open the image in Photoshop, create a new layer and color in where you want color to be. Then lower the opactity (sp?) so you can still see the color but the actual image behind the color. Hope this helps.

That is a different way I don't believe I have heard of doing that thanks Julie!

What I usually do is create a duplicate copy over the original layer. Then use your paintbrush; set the paintbrush to either overlay or color this will burn color into the photograph with out losing detail. Adjust the opacity of the brush so you can get the flow right for the look you want.
I hope this helps :o)

Thank you Julie and Melissa. What program do you use. Photoshop or painter?

Melissa, it doesn't do a perfect job (the way I described) but it is very easy and does a decent job. I will try out your way tonight. Thanks.
