What Makes Photography So Fun? Why do you think taking photos is fun? Especially when you are on vacation in a new place? I'm just interested in what other people think.

Photography is not fun, it's an addiction! Like drugs or alcohol, the more you do ... the more you need. (I often tell folks I'm hooked on Provia, which usually gets a laugh ... or at least a sympathetic grin.) Why do I like taking photos? Well, for me, it's creating something interesting and dramatic from the mundane ... or capturing life's fleeting moments and sharing them with others who might benefit from, or otherwise enjoy what I've experienced.

I got into it about a year and a half ago. I'll go with addiction ... I made dinner tonight at home ... then took several snaps of it ... then microwaved the dinner cuz it got cold ... then ate it ... :-) I have noticed, also, that when I'm wandering around ...w here I used to just look at things and walk on to the next, that I take more time looking at stuff from different angles (camera or not) ... hard to explain ... Addiction, totally. And I can relate to not just being able to "look" at things anymore. I'm always evaluating things now. It IS weird. I love everything about photography - too much. I make no money at it but spend the majority of my time doing, thinking, or spending money on it! Ridiculous! But very fun! Karma

Seeing my clients eyes well up with happiness when they see the photos I have taken of their precious little ones. That is fun! Oh, and I can't look at anything the same ever again. I am always looking to see what something would look like through the camera, etc., even when I don't have it with me.

I'm with both Bob's ... although I've never gone to the extent of preparing a meal and photographing it before consuming it. "Seeing" the world around me photographically has become a habit ... because I've worked at it to improve my compositional skills and for seeing opportunities ... that isn't easy to turn on and off at will. Things just jump out at me now as opportunities and possibilities to be explored. Ansel Adams calls it "visualizing" ... the development of a mental image of what the finished photograph will look like. The joy for me is the challenge of executing the photograph once I have a mental visualization of what I want it to look like. It's starting to extend now into studio "constructions" ... the seeing of objects around me and how they can be constructed or arranged into something that can tell a story or express an emotion ... and set it up in a studio to photograph it. The most challenging part right now is the studio lighting and working with it to get exactly what I want in illuminating the subject material. When I get an idea for a studio composition, it will gnaw at me until I execute it.

Hi Taylor, 1. Photography is for fun completely. Because, after all, especially when you are on vacation, you take photographs in order to cherish the places you visited and experienced - life long with you in your mind. It gives a wonderful feeling when you often look at your old photos. 2. When you get into "creative" shots, ohhh, yeah, you get full satisfaction mixed with freedom. Something that is inward feelings comes out to share the same with like-minded people. 3. What "Mr.Bob" said is absolutely fact. Once you start looking at the normal things, at different angles, you will start capturing them with your camera.

Hi Taylor, I have always looked at the world through an artist's eye, have been painting all my life. Since getting into taking pictures, art has taken on a whole new meaning and excitment for me. Photography, the camera is my paintbrush and the film is my canvas, and all the endless beauty of life, my subjects.

I love taking pictures. I have lots of fun doing it, and really enjoy the responses of people who appreciate the outcome. Obviously, I get more joy out of photographing my family, because I can see so much more about people that I know. When I was shooting my cousin's wedding, I realized that she was only about 6 years old when my wife & I started dating (she's actually my wife's cousin). I've watched her grow up, and now she's this beautiful woman in my pictures. I was honored to do it. I was also nervous as hell, and sweating buckets, but it was a good feeling. I do tend to get a little obsessive-compulsive at times, though. My wife has actually commented, "Don't you think it might be fun to actually PLAY with the kids, instead of just taking pictures of them playing?" What are you talking about? What could be more fun than this? Now turn your head a little to the left, and drop your chin a little, now smile . . .

I have been taking photographs since I was a child. I have always enjoyed photographing people and things. I have our family history on film, and I have my husband's family history on film. My mother-in-law always says that I am the only one who has "captured" our lives and made wonderful memories, for the entire family and future generations to come, to enjoy. My husband and I would be going down the road and something would catch my eye, (he, of course never saw the beauty in it), and I would get upset that I didn't have one of my many cameras with me (they are all big, pro cameras). He suprised me with a compact, Nikon digital camera and I NEVER leave home without it. Even if I'm going to the grocery store!

Photography is the most consuming 'sport.' I too have prepared a meal, photographed it, then eaten it. I never leave my camera, and I take pictures of EVERYTHING. I love photography because I get to show people everyday things in a new and interesting point of view. I can show them how even a cloudy day can be beautiful. I also love it because I can expound upon the common grace God has given to man. The world we live in, the people we know and love, any- and everything that brings a person's thoughts back to our creator. This, is why I love photography. We went out to dinner one day last week and, as usual, I brought my camera into the restaurant with me. Two of the staff scooted on over and asked "are you a photographer?"...turns out they were both taking a high school photography class....we chatted a short bit and parted smiling...:-) I dunno, babies and cameras are good conversation starters! Photography is an art on the same level as music and poetry. Good photography IS music and poetry. It can soothe the spirit, calm the soul, heal the mind, and inspire the world. For me, photography is about expressing myself. When I've gone through rough times I've caught myself wandering around old cemeteries and abandoned buildings to search for an inspiration. When I have been struck with awesome wonder at our Creator's handiwork, I turn to it and photograph the beauty and peace that can be found in nature. I often photograph people when the essence of their mood mirrors mine. Photography is so diverse and inclusive, yet so individualized and personal at the same time. Several people could look at the same photograph and have different interpretations of it, yet arrive at the same heart of its meaning. That's the beauty of our art. And to me, that's what it's all about.

Hi. I'm Robyn, I'm an addict! And I agree, I just see things differently - always as though through a view-finder. I take the most mundane scene, and re-crop it in my minds eye, or pretend viewfinder, then desaturate and sharpen it!! I also love showing my pix to friends who cannot take photo's, coz they just don't see things the same way, and watching their eyes light up and say, WOW, how do you see that pic, or who'd have thought of getting that low to that angle? I also love the reaction from a bridal couple, who just glow when they re-live their day through my lens. Sorry, gotta go, there's something mundane down the passage that needs to be re-framed in my mind. Time for bed this side of the world :)

Funny how this thread was dormant for over a year and then all of a sudden, the originator makes a new post on it and it's revived again. I agree with Karma and most others totally. It's an addiction. I think about it. Dream about it. Spend money on it, but rarely make any money from it. But, I always see things that most others miss or take for granted and I always enjoy the shear joy my pictures bring to others. Just as I put in my bio when I first joined BP "Many people who see my photos are in awe, not over the photo, but of the subject. Obviously, not too many of us take time to stop and see the flower, much less smell it. That's the part that gives me the greatest pleasure. Being able to share something of God's glory that people usually overlook in the hustle and bustle of everyday life." I have on occassion taken small 4x6 prints to both work and church to share with others and it always amazes me how many times someone will ask if I brought any new pictures to share. Of course, it would be a blessing if some of these people would 'BUY' some of these pictures. LOL!!!
