Telephoto Lens Choice

I am currently considering a telephoto lens up to 500mm for my wildlife photography (mostly birds).I currently use an Nikon F80 and as I am on a budget are considering either a Sigma 150-500mm or 135-400mm zoom. The other option was either Sigma or Tokinas 400mm f5.6 prime lenses around the similar price range. As the reviews I have read about all these lense are mixed has any one any field experience of them ? so I can get afeel for how the operate in use.Would much appreciate any info regarding AF performance, sharpness, robustness etc.

As an aside has any one had problems with an F80 when used in low light conditions where the AF operates VEey slowly !!
