Traveler

I am about to purchase my first camera and I as I tend to travel a great deal I want something that is compact that will generally be used to take holiday photographs. I have looked into the APS range of cameras which I think would suit my needs and I am prepared to pay up to $400.

Could you please suggest some cameras that I should focus my thoughts on?

Yes. I would seriously consider the Canon Elph as a very nice, compact and high quality APS camera. Within the $400 price range, you can also get an SLR APS like the Minolta Vectis. This may be bigger and more complicated, but with these come more flexibility and artistic possibilities. If you think you'll get into photography enough to warrant buying additional lenses and accessories, an SLR is the way to go. If not, stick with a simple and compact point & shoot.
