Softbox vs. Umbrella

Howdy Folks;

Supposing you have both available, how do you decide between using a soft box and an umbrella? What is the difference in effect created? How does size of the modifier effect the result? THANKS!!!

  The big difference between a s/b and an umbrella is that the s/b offers a bit more even light. An umbrella tends to have more of a hot spot in the center of the light. I like using the s/b in the studio because I can control the light falloff better with it. I use my umbrellas more often on location because they are much easier to set up and take down. Of course, with either modifier the larger the size the softer the light.

  Nothing new, Lisa. Most of my stuff is shot on location. The minor amount of studio work that I do, I've managed to get by with umbrellas.
