Can I use my Canon 155a flash on my Canon S5 IS?

I recently purchased a new Canon S5 IS (lost our old S2 IS). This camera comes with a hot shoe adapter (my old S2 IS did not have this). I had an old Canon 155A flash which I used and it seems to work fine. I mentioned this to a sales person at a photo store and he said I migh 'fry my camera' and I was sold a Opus Sync Protect (at a cost of approx $90). Do I really need the Opus Sync Protect. Thanks

The 155a has was made for the electronic A-series Canon film cameras (like AE-1 Program) and has low trigger voltage. It is safe to use without the sync protect. $90 seems a little high for the sync protect anyway, B&H sells the [a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/245292-REG/Wein_W990560_Safe_Sync_Hot_Shoe_to.html">Wein Safe Sync for ~$50.

With an old AE-1 or A-1 SLR, the 155a would automatically set the camera's ISO and lens aperture to the settings on the flash. I don't think this is the case with the S5. I think you'll have to manually coordinate the ISO and lens aperture settings on the camera (shooting in M or Av modes only) to match those on the flash.
