Did you check the switch that locks the aperture ring on the side of the lens where it mounts to the camera?

No, where would that be? I only saw the auto/manual focus switch. I will look at it.

It is the ring at the base of the lens that adjusts the aperture. It will be the first ring where the lens mounts to the camera.

All my lens has is the manual focus ring and the zoom ring.

Is it the standard 28-300 or the DG lens?

Its a Sigma 28-300mm DL Hyperzoom.

Yeah, but it doesn't have that ring for the aperture on the end.

I've had that same problem with a lens when the aperture ring wasn't locked. I'm not sure what to tell you other than to go over every setting on the camera and lens to see if anything has changed at all or doesn't look normal.

Lenses made for Canon EOS cameras don't have an aperture ring. What aperture are you trying to set? The numbers in the lens description (3.5-6.3) are the max aperture when zooming from wide to tele. So, when you are at the 28mm wide end of the lens' range, the max aperture you can set is f/3.5. When you are zoomed out to 300mm, the max aperture you can set is f/6.3. Chris Vedros

Chris, Didn't know that about Canon. That is interesting. Why is that?

The EOS EF mount uses electrical contacts, with no mechanical linkage like there was on older Canon FD mount lenses. The aperture is controlled electronically from the camera. So if I'm shooting in Av mode, I just turn the main dial near the shutter button to change the aperture. Chris Vedros

Nice to know. Thanks. I assumed and you know what that does. I'm a Nikonian so had no way of knowing. I still have a 1980 (roughly) version of an AE-1 which was film and it had the aperture ring.
