Nikon D70s Focus Issues

Hello everyone,

I am wondering if anyone has run into issues with the focus on their D70 or D70s? I have a D70s and feel that many of my images are far too soft, or that the area that is in clear focus is not what I was focusing on. For example, I did a maternity shoot this weekend, and I was careful to always have the focus point on her face, however, her belly seems crisp and her face seems soft when I look at the images on the PC. I have tried a few different lenses and am just not pleased with the images from them all, even when the camera is tripod-mounted.

My father has a D70 as well (not the "s" version) and he had MAJOR backfocus issues with it. He has sent it to Nikon several times for repair, and now it seems accurate at times, but often the images are extremely soft.

Has anyone else run into this? I am very discouraged because I hear so many great things about these cameras, yet he and I both seem to be having issues.

For the record, I also shoot with a Nikon F100 and don't seem to have any issues with the focus on that, so hopefully its not user error:-)

I am so disappointed with the D70s that I am thinking of buying a new camera, but when I hear all the great things that other people say, I realize something strange must be going on. Maybe there is still hope that I can figure it out and love it as much as everyone else does.

Thanks,
Karen

Karen, I have a D70 and have had no focus problems with mine. I read of the back focus issues with the camera and found a website that provided a way of testing your camera and mine checked out ok. I have the D200 now that I use most of the time and the focusing on it is very accurate. The D300 is coming out soon. Maybe it's time for you to upgrade? :-).

It almost sounds like you aren't stopping the lens down far enough. I have problems with focus when I use a wide aperture. If the D100 works well for you then that's unlikely the problem. I would assume you use both cameras similiarly. This site has a DOF calculator. Wouldn't hurt to check that as well.

Thank you Sharon, I will check out those links. It's funny that you replied to this question, because I was just reading the thread entitled "Just made my first 50 cents!" where you contributed a lot, and I was even checking out your gallery, probably as you were replying to my question! (You have very beautiful photos.) That thread piqued my interest regarding the stock sites, I think I am going to check them out.

Thanks for your feedback regarding the D70. I just learned about the D300 this morning and I agree - time for an upgrade! :-)

Thanks for the compliment on my gallery, Karen! Email me through my gallery if you have any questions about microstock. While I'm not making as much as I would like it's still fun and I do make enough for quite a few extras.

May be a late answer, but Nikon D70s is well known for its accuracy in focussing, I had one sold and bought Canon XTi (400D) Now I regrest, because the sharpness I got out of D70s is much better that new 400D. This must be your camera's problem, usually D70s is a very good DSLR and still used by professionals. Upgrade is available, straight a way D200 (D300 is very costly for me) or D80 but I prefer D200

Not a late answer at all, and thank you for the feedback. I am thinking the problem is just something wrong wth my camera, but I sent it to Nikon about a year ago and they said they "calibrated" it and that it was fine. Unfortunately I don't agree. Is it possible that I have something wrong in the settings? I am reasonably experienced at this and truly feel like I've covered my bases in terms of looking for errors, but I just can't figure out why everyone else loves theirs and I feel like mine is horrible.

Thanks!
