property releases

I am looking to go professional and sell my images, but I am not sure about property release forms. For instance, if you shoot a picture of a public building, do you have to have permission from whomever owns the building to sell this? I could see that you would for a car, motorcycle, etc. What are the rules for this?

I'm in the UK but I assume rules for the US would be similar. As far as I'm aware , if you take the shot from a public place then you do not have to get permission either to take photos or to sell them. If you are on private property, as a general rule, you will have to get permission to take photographs in the first place. Responses to requests are very varied, anything between open encouragment and getting thrown off the premises. An offer of duplicates sometimes helps. Some places will allow photography for private use only as long as you agree not to sell them and you may be asked to sign a form to that effect (again, this applies only if you are on or inside the premises). I've sold a few photos of buildings through an agency but never been asked for a release form. These days though, thanks to terrorists, everybody seems to be getting a bit touchy about having their buildings photographed and I've been approached by the police twice now, but after explaining what I'm doing they've left me alone (a business card with the word 'photgrapher' on it helps!)
