Photography Question

Ken Pang

Getting my work published!

Guess what peoples?

I'm getting my work published!

I did a formal photo shoot the other day for a friend. I didn't charge her for it or anything, because she's a good friend of mine. Anyway, she was so impressed with them, that she showed them to everyone - including the place where she got the formal dress from.

The store now wants to use the photos for in store promotion. That is really cool. I'm not charging them for the photo, so that kind of voids any contract I offer them, but I've given them a memorandum of understanding that says I'm going to let them use it for free.

Anyway, just thought I'd share this bit of excitement with you all.

They must be pretty excited too that they get to use some photos for free. Of course the photographers in your area probably don't share your excitement now that there's one less job and one more photographer devaluing photography. I hope you don't make a habit out of giving your photography away.

Just try to imagine how much money they will be making by using that photo of yours!

the money is not that important at this point the important thing is your work is out there, you should be really proud of that I know I would be good job.

You must be on cloud 9 right now. Congratulations. I must agree with the above though...don't continue to work for free. It is a good start to get your name going but you don't want to be known for charging nothing either. I hope you do well.

  Ken,
Congrats to you! I can't wait to be able to say the same. And just think this is just the start.

BTW Jeff, Are you that old that you can't remember when??? ...or were you born a professional?

Jill, the fact is there are a lot of photographers out there trying to earn a living an support their families. Everytime some newby comes along and gives his/her work away it makes it just that much harder for everyone else to make a living. Not only is that one less job it gives the impression that photography isn't worth very much if this guy's willing to just give it away.

  Jeff,
Understood, Definately! I too am someone who someday hopes to make money from photography once I get proper instruction and can better my craft. However we all have to start somewhere, and it makes good buisness sense to get your work out there and visable, in order to get recognized. I also think that this buisness establishment is more likely to call on Ken again for additional promotional work, being that he has already done good productive work for them already. At which time he can establish is rates. If they don't call on him again he at least has his work out there and perhaps it will catch someone else's eye who will want to hire him.

Yes, you do have to start somewhere. But having been there and done that I can tell you that most newbies make the mistake in thinking they have to give their stuff away to get their name out there or keep their prices low in order to attract business. There are plenty of places you can display your work. When a business wants your images for their own promotion its foolish to just give them away. Sure they may call Ken again but guess what they will be expecting to pay. Probably what they paid the last time. Hey, I've done those things. I've given my time, talent, and products away thinking it was a shrewd marketing move. But I've found that when you do that you don't get as much business from it as you would think. And what business I did get wasn't willing to pay my prices. They just figured I'd give it away (again). You're much better off placing your images in areas that will attract the kind of business you want.
