What is a Digital Transparency?

When a company asks for a transparency submission, what exactly is that and how do you achieve it in a digital format? The definition is a positive format for the photo objects ... not a negative?

Transparency equals slide ... a positive film image created with slide film. Many publishers still prefer (or require) transparency submissions.

There are many companies online that produce "digital slides." It is a FILM slide made from a DIGITAL file.
I use and recommend www.slides.com. You can upload your digital file (ideal size is 32 MB - 4096 x 2731 ppi in Adobe RGB 1998 workspace). They will produce a film slide, and return it to you via U.S. mail. You could also take your file (in CD form) to a prominent photo lab near you. The quality of the slide depends on the quality of your file.

That's interesting info, Michael. I wasn't aware that this was being done.

I am a graphic designer/photographer. The practice of asking for Transparencies/Slides really is a thing from the past. In the "printing industry" this was preferred as high quality "scans" were best done on a drum scanner (transparency preferred). However, adding another process to converting an image is not good practice. If the original is "digital" then leave it that way. Going from digital to transparency will lose some definition (ie: another process, and unncessary). Some old fuddy duddies have not caught up with the 21st century and still ask for this format. Maybe they prefer to view the pics on an antiquated "slide projector" (as do many art curators when asking for entries into competitions). Digital is great (and high quality digital is even better).

Great information, this thread alone makes the weekly read useful. I have chosen not to enter some competitins this year because I do not use transparency film any longer.
Thank you.
