Best Digital Camera for Macro Use

I am going to purchase a digital camera for doing very close up still photos. I am interested in recommendations in the amateur only price range. ($200-$400) Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You may have to decide whether both the convenience of digital and the special requirements of macro can be met in a camera of this price range. If you are really interested in doing serious macro, you'd be better off using a 50 or 100mm macro lens on a manual focus camera. The total outlay wouldn't be any worse than $200-400. Sure, you can take a close-up pictures with any number of digital point'n shoots, but if you want a clear, distortion-free image, you might be asking a bit much of a camera in this price range. For either way, you'd do well to invest in a tripod.

Like Doug said, you may have difficulty finding a camera in that price range that will take great macro photos. I use a Fuji FinePix S602 which is digital and has a wonderful macro setting on it. I'm like you, I couldn't afford a digital SLR at the time but this camera takes great macro photos and also has manual focus (which you will need most likely for some shots). Fuji doesn't sell the S602 anymore because it was replaced by the latest version the S700 (I think that's what it is called). It might be a bit out of your price range though. I know you can still buy the S602 new off of Ebay if you're comfortable purchasing things from there. You can check out my website if you want examples of the macro work it can do. www.juliecurielphotography.com HOpe this helps!

I purchased a Canon A70 digital for my macro work. It had the best macro in its class, something like 2cm focus. I use it for getting cloes-ups of flowers, you can view some in my gallery. I own film and digital SLR's but still use the A70 for my macros. (no tripod by the way ; ) )

I am just starting in photography and purchased the Fuji S700. I bought mine for $229 and love it. I have taken a couple of macro shots and I have to say the picture is beautiful.
