Photography Question

camera buying

I am thinking of buying a new camera I currently have a Nikon D80. I am looking at a Canon EOS D50 and a Nikon D90. I was wondering if the Canon was better than the Nikon. Opinions please. I shoot mainly nature and landscape photos.

If you have significant investment in Nikon lenses, speedlight(s), the Nikon software for RAW (Capture NX) or control (Camera Control Pro), or other accessories then I would stay in the Nikon family. If you only have the D80 and the "kit" lens, then choose freely.

I don't think there is a clear "better" choice between them. They both are well made and are capable of great results. But they are designed with different feature sets and aimed at different price points. The EOS 50D positioned between the Nikon D90 and their D300.

IMHO, YMMV.

Thanks Jon. I am heavily invested in Nikon but was maybe thinking of investing in Canon if the 50D produced better results than the D90.

I agree with Jon in terms of no clear better choice. If you can afford to reinvest heavily in a Canon body and lenses, why not take the money you would save by sticking with Nikon and go up a level or 2, for instance the D300 or D700 instead of the D90. I have the D300 and have no regrets about going a little beyond what I could really afford.

When my daughter was going to Japan for a semester we needed a camera for her. She took my D80 with a 18-200 lens.

I bought the D300 and fell in love. From the first it felt like I'd come home.

Find the camera that makes you feel like you've "come home" and you will be happy.

If you've got quality lenses then I'd try to do it with Nikon before trying anywhere else.

Kathleen I shoot Canon and love my 50D but I'm in total agreement with the advice you've been given here. Go look at that D300 or D700. I tried the full frame format right after I got my 50D and was ready to trade up. After much consideration I didn't but instead of moving from Nikon to Canon I'd look to move up in Nikon full frame.

  Kathleen,

I used to shoot Nikon (had a Nikon FE and FM3A) and two Nikon lenses, but my images (perhaps my brain) did not work well with Nikon. And in 2004, I went to Canon and started over again.

It's the photographer, not the camera, I've since learned. Cameras can do amazing things in the hands of the right person with the right eye.

I love my Canon's metering system, which helped my images improve enormously over the metering in the manual Nikon, but maybe the upper level Nikon's would have been equally as good.

If you already are invested in Nikon, stay with Nikon, but move up. Compare what others have done here at BP with cameras that you are considering. That will give you an idea of what the camera is capable to doing. And, take classes at BP--they are really helping improve my work. Perhaps, you can also benefit.
