  Hi Simone,

Your 20D was likely sold with a zoom lens with a focal length range of 18mm ~ 55mm. These are focal length values and they tell us if the view will be wide-angle – normal – or telephoto. For this model a setting of 27mm is about ‘normal’. Anything shorter produces a wider view. Anything longer and the view will be narrower meaning you will see a magnified outlook. To truly capture a wide-angle view using this camera, you might consider mounting a lens 70% of normal which is 18mm or shorter. So at the widest wide-angle setting your camera is just entering the realm of wide angle. Now a telephoto for this model starts at 55mm and goes longer.

So what would I advise?

For wide-angel, 10mm would be nice. For telephoto 150mm would be wonderful.

What I am really trying to tell you is: Cameras and their lenses are tools just as is a hammer or wrench. Before going to the tool store, you need to have a clue about what is you wish to accomplish. Scenic photographers tend to gravitate to wide-angel, nature photographers prefer telephoto, and coin/bug photographers are keen on macro lenses.

What is your heart’s desire?

  Hello Simone,
I'll tell you how I started and where I ended up. I 1st bought a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 & the Canon 70-200mm f/4 L (non-IS version) and then sold them to buy the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L and the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L lenses. The 1st 2 lenses were much cheaper and I sold them to get better quality although the 70-200mm f/4 is a great lens for under $600. I then added a Canon 17-40mm f/4 L and then the Canon 100-400mm f/4.5 IS L for wide angle and zoom capability.
If you have the $$ get the best quality because or you could end up like me and eventually sell them and replace with something better. I also have a 100mm Macro with a ringlight, 135mm f/2.0 L and a 50mm f/1.4. I also recommend a good tripod & ball head, a 430EX or 580EX flash, remote shutter release and maybe a circular polarizer. There's my list - have fun filling up your Tamrac/Lowe camera backpack...
