Canon or Sigma lense for my XTi

Hello all.
I'm just about to buy a 300mm lens for my Canon XTi camera. My budget is not that big so from my research I have found a couple of possible options from which I would like to hear your comments.
First option I'm seeing is the: Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro Telephoto Zoom Lens which has been greatly recommended by a friend of mine and has the additional advantage of being Macro as well.
The second option I have is: Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Telephoto Zoom. I have no references of this one but I like the idea of having my gear on the same branding.
I'd higly appreciate your comments on this so I can take the best decision. None of the lenses are IS but unfortunately I don't have the money to buy an IS lens so for now I will give it a try.
If there is a third option you think I may consider, please let me know as well.
From my point of view, Sigma has 2 possible advantages against the Canon one which are the Macro and that it's range goes from 70mm and not from 75mm.

Thanks so much in advanced for your help.

  hey minor,
I have a tamron 70-300,which I like quite well, with the macro designation.the macro thing is kinda bogus.even though it (works) you won't get good macro results, more of a sales gimmick.
the 70 vs 75,not a big deal.
the usm on the canon might be a big plus for faster focusing, yet might make it heavier for carrying around.
whichever you buy, when in the future you decide to purchase a converter,1.4 or 2x,make sure it's the same brand for best performance.
I have one sigma lens.a 20-35.very quick af and very sharp.i've had it 12+ years with no problems.oh yeah,i bought it used.then again i've never heard any thing bad about a canon lens other than the usual one in a thousand who does have a problem.
good luck,sam
