what lense to get?

i purchased jims book to help me along and its just left me feeling like I dont have the lens to create half the shots in his book.

i mostly want to photograph my son but I would like to be creative too

so my question is should I buy a lens with telephoto and macro capabilities or just get the cheaper lens kits?

i dont have much cash to spend on this but I would rather save to get the better option
