Buying a flash with a shoe mount HELP!!! I am needing a flash that will mount on my Canon EOS 20D. One that will work well for portraits and banquets. But I have NO IDEA where to start. Can anyone help me choose what flash would work best? Lindsey

Canon's own EX series speedlites (580EX, 430EX)are very good and have the greatest level of compatibility. Sigma's EF 530 DG Super and EF 500 DG Super models are close substitutes and a bit less expensive. Metz also makes very good compatible speedlights, but in the USA they cost just as much as the Canon models. Sunpak PZ42X is also an economical alternative, but will not work in a wireless multiple E-TTL setup.

Thanks John. So these flashes that you have listed will help with both potrait shots as well as those tricky shots indoors (example awards ceremony)

You'll most likely want to invest in a Sto-fen or Gary Fong difusser for the flash...you can google a description but most photogs use them...actually you can make one but they only cost $20 so why bother.
