The HP Photosmart 7960. The reason this printer does such a phenomenal job with black and white is because HP designed a gray scale ink that is used in this printer to give true to life, B&W tonal color. Keep in mind that other printers mix actual colors with black ink to come up with a faux black and white look which oftentimes gives a B&W photo a red, blue or yellow tinge. HP 7960 uses true black and gray to create the perfect look of B&W. You would be hard pressed to tell the difference between an HP 7960 black and white photo and a lab printed photo.

Tarris, Thank you for your response, I will look into the HP Photosmart 7960. Having worked in the darkroom for years, I have been hesitant to try digital. Your explanation gives me hope !!!

I use a Canon S9000 printer that uses a 6 ink cartridge. It produces a true black and white prints. Here's a photo I took using Kodak T400CN black and white film, scanned with Nikon CoolScan IV ED, and printed with the Canon printer. I am very satisfy with the result. http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/dynoGallDetail.php?photoID=467175&catID=966&style=&contestCatID=
