TOtally depends on your camera position in relation to the subject. If you plan on being more than but a few feet away, go with a longer lens to fill the frame with the distant sapsucker. If on a tripod up close with a long release cable, then a shorter lens might be allowable. Of course you could not compose an image from up close without disturbing the birds. Perhaps covering yourslef from them at 12 or more feet away with a longer lens might yield better results. But play around. Be creative. Experiment. And see what happens.
