minolta xtsi camera with sigma len

I have a minolta xtsi camera, I also have a sigma zoom f2.8-3.5 75mm-200mm auto focus lens. I bought the xtsi to give me more control from the qtsi camera, but with the xtsi, the auto focus will not work. Is this lens just to fast for the xtsi camera to handle in auto mode? I also have the minolta 75mm-300mm af f4.5-5.6 zoom lens that work very well with the xtsi but, I hoped to use the faster lens to take indoor sport shots. Is manual focus my only option to use sigma lens on the xtsi camera?
Thanks Lloyd

does that sigma work on your qtsi?
no the lens is not too fast for the camera.
have you checked the contact pins to see if maybe they're bent, damaged or corroded?
does the lens itself have a af/manual switch?
if your sure it's an af lens then we start heading down the road of bad news.

That is what is strange, the sigma lens works perfect on the qtsi, but the qtsi gives no setting to change or
light indication. That is why I bought the xtsi, to have more indication of shutter speed, f stops and lighting indications.
The xtsi works perfectly with another zoom len, but this lens is slow (f4.5-5.6).
The xtsi does not show the aperture setting at all when the sigma len is attached, but when the minolta zoom lens is attached, it show the aperture settings and also lets you change it in manual mode.
And no the sigma lens does not have an af/m switch, just the one on the cameras. I did not suspect the contact pins, because the other zoom lens works fine, and the sigma work well on the qtsi. Very puzzling to me.

  well lloyd,
my brain hurts.i've went thru custom functions and default settings and arrrrgh.
near as I can figure it's a mass production problem.when you mount the sigma lens to your xtsi and it is locked try to rock it a small amount left and right.my thinking is there is a contact/communication problem.
there has to be just a slight alignment problem.it communicates with one and not the other?
the speed of the lens never effects the operation of the camera.
just be careful and don't twist the lens too forceful.

Hate to keep bugging you, but could the problem be the mounting ring on the camera? The Qtsi has a plastic ring that may not be as thick as the metal ring on the Xtsi. And if so can I just trade the rings without messing up the inside parts. It looks like I could remove 6 screw, but not sure what else will come loose under the ring. What do you think?

  no lloyd.
umm.can't start jumping around.ya ain't buggin me.i feel i've missed something.but please don't start changing parts.
a possibility is that it's an older sigma lens that although it communicates with your qtsi, and there is a chip in it,that it doesn't quite communicate with your xtsi.
now when changing lenses, could you have possibly have bumped your af/mf button on the front of your camera body?
but if all else fails, mount that lens on your qtsi, set it to sports mode and it will set the fastest shutter speed possible.or like you said.might have to use manual focus.
ya ain't buggin me lloyd,if down the road I have that problem,i wanna know.

Well it looks like I bought the xtsi for nothing, the sigma lens will not work even in manual. I guess it just does not communicate with the xtsi. But, at least when I use the slower zoom lens, I will have some idea of shutter speed and lighting level in the gym using the xtsi. Thanks for you info.

I think I found something that will let me use the sigma lens on the xtsi camera. I found a web site that said to hold the (drive/timer) button with the (spot) button and turn the camera on. The camera will show OFF in the viewing window, then you can take pictures and change shutter speed but you can not see the aperture setting. The problem now is, what is the aperture setting?
I used the xtsi with the 75-300mm lens at a basketball game, and the pictures turned out pretty good by just setting the shutter speed to 1/125
Now I will try the sigma f2.8 with the xtsi, I just hope the f2.8 is the aperture setting.
I just wanted to see if you had ever heard of this to make a lens work.

  hey lloyd,
I was told that would work with older manual focus lenses that wouldn't communicate with the camera.
I have an older quantaray 500mm mirror lens that I have set up in that way but off doesn't appear in my viewfinder or the lcd panel as stated.everything is shown except the aperture.
that I was told would be the same as the f-stop of the lens which is f8.
after using this setup for several moonshots and some sunset and sunrise photos the results were much worse than my 300mm with a 2x convertor.it did work though,i just wasn't happy with the results.
so yeah I would think your camera would be shooting at f2.8 .
wonder if you could post that website for me?

The (off) is only for a few seconds then it works the way you described, all info. except aperture setting. The address is http://www.popphoto.com/article.php?section_id=4&article_id=694&page_number=1 Thanks again for you help.

now in the lack of actual aperture setting it will give a plus or minus value.

I just got back my pictures using the xtsi camera with sigma len and none of the pictures turned out. I sure thought the manual method would work. Everything seemed to work correctly but no pictures. Can you think of any other way for this lens to work?

mount it on your qtsi, set it on sports mode with some good 800 iso film and try to be as steady as possible.might even want to get some 1600 speed.
other than that i'm lost,sam
