At this moment in time there are 93 hopeful photos awaiting their fate from the judges. I recognized many from the usual suspects and some names that were new. Welcome to all and good luck to all. They all looked great so I'm glad I'm not judging.

Ok, now I'm really confused on the judging. They are up to August 6, and so far I think 4 is the max number of ep's per day. I'm curious if this means we have to wait until the first part of next month to see if we actually got any ep's for August. Anybody have any clue's on what changes are being made?

Can't say I have any answers, but I will offer a guess based on past months. (However patterns tend to change often.) What we have been seeing lately is concentration on the last month until complete, then emphasis on the next month. During that process, there is often a small amount of eps granted in the current month, but only a taste. When winners are announced concentration then goes to the next month which lately has been at the tail end of the month.

You know, if judges are pressed for time, they should not be wasting their time with August until they are ready to treat it with their full attention. If they are chewing 3 EP's a day, does that mean that their decisions were really made at that time, and when they came back everything else was an afterthought? This is no way to judge a competition, sorry!

It seems only one person knew -or only one person commented anyway. Anybody else have this happen?

Hi Cindy. I think yours will be included in the next email. It appears the email is an "after the fact" sort of thing. The POTD's are still posted daily, but I think most people just wait til the email comes out to see and/or comment on them.

I had that happen to me a few weeks ago. I did get an email telling me my photo had been selected as POTD but I never received any other comments from anyone else. It was like I won this nice honor but no one knew. That's okay, but in the past getting selected as photo of the day was a big deal and you received some public recognition for it.

David, I got a POTD sometime in the last week because I discovered it when I got home today. It is the first in over a year or two and one of maybe three in all. Well, two wonderful people have commented on it. Before, I had many, many congratulations given. What gives? Is it not being published or is it for my eyes only? I am very grateful for the selection by the way. I was just wondering why it is different this time.

Harriet, the only e-mail notification I get with POTDs is the weekly e-mail. The last weekly one I got was from Aug 14th. I have no idea if they give daily e-mails anymore. I just went to the POTD page and yours was on there, at the top: I can only assume that I'll "officially" see it when the next weekly e-mail comes out on Aug 21st. Again...I don't get the daily POTD notifications either and unclear who does.

Cindy, I saw your POTD in the weekly e-mail I got from BP on the 14th. Seems like some folks get notifications right off the bat. I only get them weekly. Next one would be the 21st, which would (presumably) include the daily POTDs from the 15th thru the 21st.

I do think there will be way fewer congratulations now that the POTD emails come out weekly rather than daily. I know I used to comment the daily ones quite frequently - it was easy to do so: click, open, comment, close. I was done. Now with seven at once, I scroll quickly down the images in my email and MAYBE go back to comment on one or two. It's unlikely that most people will bother to open the first one, click and scroll through the comments to get to the box where they can comment (takes extra effort to do that, too, since the new format came out), comment, close, go back to the email and scroll to the next one, repeat six more times. I think the days of excitement over POTD's are over, so don't take a lack of comments personally; just continue to enjoy knowing that one of your images really, really caught someone's eye.

So far for the month of August I have submitted 9 photos into the monthly contest. These entries were made at the beginning of the month and I have received 1 EP. That EP came very early, around the 2nd of August and then nothing since that time.

It looks like from the best I can tell folks, using the Animals category as example, they gave out 1 EP on the 1st, 1 EP on the 2nd and 1 EP on the 4th (which in my opinion was to a photo that was not even an Animal photo and just a snapshot at that), and then nothing since. (3EPs total). I also looked at the other categories and saw similar, so realistically they have not actually yet been giving EP's out yet. So, as of the 19th of August, we are still awaiting any movement past EP's for July, and have seen basically nothing for August. Why they went to the trouble of giving a couple of EP's to EP's at the start of the month, I have absolutely no idea, other than perhaps they needed some POTD's. Does anyone know what is going on. It would be nice if we were informed, since we are the participants.

I have none out of about 14. It looks like (and its not exactly identical, but very similar in all categories), they picked like 1 on the 1st, on on the 2nd and 1 on the 4th, and then they picked a couple more around the 12th, and thats all folks! My other observation was that of those many were great, while a few chosen left me completely scratching my head. If a judge has to choose one or two out of all those photos, even for one day, there seemed to be times when the judge was asleep on the job. (FYI, my photos were never in question on those days). :-) For what it's worth, I just like to see the best photos receive the proper acclaim. I'm also assuming that we are still awaiting any news for July?

Just went to see the EP site and found that all of the 'Editors First Picks' for August (grand total for all categories combined of 36 [lol] have been posted. So, if we have 10 categories, that must mean 3 to 4 EP's per category. I find it interesting, that with all the discussion that has been generated this month combined with the fact that we are still waiting for any movement for July, that Jim Miotke has not put any message on this site or talked with the author of this site as he usually does.

This is really confusing. First, it doesn't appear any of the image for the last half of the month were judged. Second, there aren't enough ep's to select a grand prize, first place prize and multiple second place prizes in each of the categories, and that doesn't even take into account the finalists and staff favorites. Does this mean the judging protocol has been radically changed? Sure would be nice to get some info from Jim on what's happening.

Cindy and Teresa, I've been on BP for 10 years and BP has been very, very consistent in how they did the contest judging. True, the EP rate would swing from 75% to 25%, then back to 50%. But they would pretty much do EPs for one day, then move to the next, then the next until they were done with the month. And for the last 6 months or so, they've made a 2nd pass through. But as you've noted from looking at the EPs on the EP page (http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/dynoGall2.php?Favpt=EPs), they have skipped many days. This is the first month in 10 years where they've done this, at least based on what I've seen. I have to think this is a glitch and that BP will get it fixed. I'm not stressing over it, because I do think it's a glitch. I do not think they've evaluated most of the August photos, for whatever reason. So, please don't get discouraged and let's have the faith they'll get things back to normal soon. Jim, could you chime in here and help me out? :-)

Congratulations to your POTD, Harriet! I didn't know BP had started with them again. But I haven't got any e-mail notifications in such a long time, so I have kind of lost interest for this site. I enjoyed looking at the POTD's when they came in a daily e-mail, but I never ever get them now. Same with notifications if someone comments on my pictures, nothing there either.

As a 25 year professional computer programmer, recently retired, nothing about this has any of the typical signs of a computer 'glitch'. Computer problems tend to make the same mistakes consistently, or at least there is a pattern to them. I agree that at some point there will be a second round of judging, but in this case, I really wonder what the purpose of the first round was. As we are still waiting for results for July and for all practical purposes, August has not been judged, I'm wondering if at this point we do not have any judges and Jim is for whatever reason overwhelmed. In the recent past, he has always kept us informed through this site.

Cindy, when I said "glitch", I didn't explicitly mean it was a hardware/software issue. But clearly something is different as I've watched EP round for many years. For the last few months, I think BP has averaged 6000 images a month, so roughly 200 images a day. And if the EP rate is 50%, then that's 100 images a day. In eye-balling the Contest--EP page, the last one uploaded to contest was 12 Aug. So, that's 12 days which means with 100 EPs a day, that's 1200 EPs thru 12 days if you assume an average number of EPs. But, there are probably 30-40 on the EP page; not 1200. So, something is wrong. That's all I'm saying. Perhaps they've gone thru the first 12 days and their process is not displaying all the categories. In fact, as I look at the EP page, I don't really see any landscape photos, or at least photos I think would definitely fit in landscape. I can't imagine they'd look at each photo and not select any in the N/L category, for 12 days. Something is amiss. It would help if BP would chime in, and hopefully they will.

Ken, Yeah, there seem to be only 2 landscape EP, despite the amazing number of spectacular photos. I've gone through them one at a time through the first 12 days and the 2 displayed on the EP site correspond to the 2 that are showing EP's if you look individually within the landscape site for August for the first 12 days (not counting any that may have already had EP's prior). 8/1 Sunset Camel Ride We all are in agreement something is very different that we are used to in the past, and at this point all we can do is wait for some answers and hope that all will get resolved and things will continue a normal.

Nikki, for what it's worth, there was definitely a second round done for July, where folks had reported on this site, that they received many additional EP's. Myself, in the initial round I had received 4 EP's, and then in the 2nd round (I believe for the 2nd half of the month), I received and additional 11 EP's. It is not clear to me if they ever went through and did a review of the first half when they did the quote "2nd round", as for the first half of the month my best photos were overlooked (2 award winning photos), and they seemed to be picking up photos of mine in the 2nd half which I considered to be 'throw aways'. [lol]. I believe that was at the start of August. Since then, absolutely nothing has gone on with July, and we are, I assume, awaiting some kind of results, as there is little more than a week left in August!. When I started, earlier this year, although I noticed judging inconsistency, they were doing a better job. My biggest concern right now is why we have not heard from Jim, as in the past, he has been known to monitor this page in the past, and as owner of this site, he is aware of what is going on with his contests.

Nikki, since July is not active, is there any way to actually look through the July photos? If so, I would actually go through them all to see if I could find a pattern to what was chosen and when. Your specific inactivity for the 2nd half of the month compared to my overactivity for the same period fascinated me. Especially when I had just the opposite for the 1st half of that month. ;-)

As I type it is almost the 23rd of August. Does anyone know where the judging left off? I have only entered five and, although I may be just a little biased, I think at least four of them are worthy of an EP but so far, nothing. I am hesitant to continue entering if nothing is happening. Unless there is a whole lot of behind the scene activities, I fail to see how all those photos can be judged before the end of the month. I was asked by a professional photographer and guide recently if BP was still in business. I affirmed that it was but now I am wondering.... I wish someone would fill us in. I hope everything is still ok at BP.

August's don't have to be judged until September and while the judging could certainly be started before then, the judging on them cannot be completed until all the August entries are in :) Give 'em a few more to look at - IOW keep entering :)

It's not Vacation!!! [lol]. What makes everyone think there is actually staff associated with this site. I'm assuming at this point, Jim does this all on his own. I have only been here during this year, so I do not know how things were handled when there were instructors, but those courses generated income and good exposure for instructors, even if paid relatively little.

Yes I came online to mentioned that BP added some EP's (al brit not normal amounts) for Aug 13-18. For Aug 13 added 3, for Aug 14 added 10, and then for 15th thru 18 add somewhere between 33 and 50ish per day. Good luck. To you flower folk it looks like lots of flowers to me! I got 1. I'm now 1 for 30. Yippee!

For those who are interested and don't have the time or willingness to do this yourself, here is the tally by day as of today for August EP's. Sorry, even I'm not going to go through them by category. :-) (subject to my making counting mistakes) 8/1 = 6 8/16 = 52 For a grand total of 326. Based on this, it looks like they are really just beginning. Why they would have even wasted their time with the first pass baffles me.

Last day of August... Right now we have 4990 entries in the contest. Over the last several months we have averaged about 6000 entries a month. So I would estimate that we will end up with about 5200 entries for August. I report this because it may translate into less EPs.

I may be wrong, but it seems that there probably is not enough staff to do judging?
