Using a teleconverter

Is there any advantage to using teleconverters on shorter telephoto lens? I have a Minolta Maxxum system and use a AF 85mm f/1.4 for a lot of my work (people photog). I wanted to extend the range to 120 (1x) or 170 (2x) since there are no single focus in that range made for Minolta, so I thought using a converter might help. What are the drawbacks to doing so since teleconverters are usually used for much longer telephoto lens?

As with any lens when you add a TC you will degrade the image sharpness. How much depends upon the quality of the TC. You also lose light based upon the factor of the TC. So if it's a 2x TC you lose 2 stops of light.
