What excately is a Portfolio? I had a Magazine contact me asking me to send them a Portfolio of my work... I know that it is a body of work for them... but is it a CD slide show? Or actual images printed and slid into a Portfolio book? What exactly are they looking for? I don't want to screw up a good chance on making money. Thanks! Julie

They might just need a link to your gallery.

Be careful! You may want to check on the Magazine before you send them anything!

What do you mean by that Jessica... I know what images to show to the Magazine, I just don't know what a portfolio is... I think a link to my gallery isn't very professional. (no offense Greg)

Hi Julie, I think if you got yourself a Deluxe Pro website, it would work fine as a portfolio. The pre-digital portfolio's were a book of prints that you would show to clients but these digital days, I think its easier all around to have a nice professional looking site of your work. Better Photo makes it real easy to put together a professional looking website with many customizable options (such as sales) etc.. I have my equipment listed along with other tabs of information. It would probably be cheaper as well rather than printing off a bunch of photos and they are large enough to give the customer a look at them and they are also right-click protected. Take a browse through some of the Pro sites and see if anything tickles your fancy :) - Carlton

Hi Julie, Just my opinion: a website is a low res version of my work. If a magazine is going to print full page copies of my images they are going to want to see high resolution output, that is Big Prints. When I shoe a portfolio it is individual prints, at least 8X10 inches mounted and matted on oversize board. . I wouldn’t submit small prints to the magazines I write for, or images from my website. I submit large digital files, so that they can print at the highest possible quality. Thanks, John Siskin

With every story of someone saying that you have to send in big prints, there's a story of someone who uses their website or uses smaller leave behinds because art directors get so many submissions. You here from both photographers and art directors. What made the magazine contact you in the first place, if they hadn't seen your pictures yet?

I actually contacted them asking if they buy photos from Freelance Photographers...

Just to mention it, I use the Photographer’s Market and the Writer’s Market to research potential markets. Thanks, John Siskin

since you heard back from them just from asking if they buy photos, then you can ask them what form would they like a portfolio.

Thanks John, I am starting there but figured I would start with a few smaller local magazines since it's easier getting local images. Greg, what a great idea. I honestly didn't know if I was "allowed" to ask, or if it was professional to do that. But great idea! I'll do that! Thanks everyone!

Magazines don't really buy photos as if you happen to have some, would you like to purchase some. They want to see what you have to see if they can use you for an assignment or something.

First half is missing. This thing about you wanting to appear professional you shouldn't worry about that for now because I think you already revealed to them that you are new when you asked them if they buy photos. Now add the above here...
