I do not wish to start another debate about the merits of film vs digital but I would go with the film SLR. You will have a much more versatile camera that can grow with your needs. If you decide to go digital, go with an SLR. An SLR will give you the options of changing lensesm flashes, etc. It should have automation plus manual controls. You may not think you need manual control at the present time but you will as yopu learn more about photography.
