PREPARING FOR DIGITAL

If I'm learning a new film camera (Elan 7E, which is a big move up from my Nikon FE and FM3A), in order to move into the direction of a Canon EOS digital, would it be better for me to shoot positives rather than negatives?

Is it true the slides are closer to digital with regards to exactness in exposure and contrast ratios?

I know how to measure contrast ratios with an off the camera Sekonic flash and ambient light meter, but do not have a clue when using an Elan 7E. Advise is welcomed.

Thanks.

Absolutely! to both questions.
Digital sensors respond to light very similar to the way positive film does. Here's the golden rule of slide film exposure - Expose for the highlights, and let the shadows fall where they may. Follow the same rule for your digital camera.

With your digital camera you will be able to save or bring back SOME shadow areas in contrasty situations, BUT you can never add back detail in washed out highlights. Thus, just as in positive film, be sure your exposure will give you detail in the highlight areas you want, then just let the shadows fall where they will.
