Photography Question

Adam J. Lucas

Medium Format, 6x4.5 or 6x7??

I am getting very interested in the thought of purchasing a medium format system to run alongside my Minolta Dynax 7 35mm equipment.

Due to the larger negs, I will be getting better quality enlargements, but my question is will 6x7cm negs be much better than 6x4.5cm? I am very keen on starting off with a used Bronica ETRSi kit, and supplementing it with a good portrait lens and wide angle lens. Getting them inexpensively is not a problem, as I work for a photography retailer who deal in second hand equipment.

I had a similar question published in Amateur Photographer magazine where the guy advised me that the Pentax 67 would be a good one to go for. I do portraits, landscapes and still-life. But the Pentax has a flash-sync speed of only 1/30 sec, wouldn't this be limiting with portraits even when mounted on a tripod? And I'd want interchangeable film-backs too.

I would like the option being able to print up to about 20x30" enlargements, but will 6x4.5 negs hold enough detail for this size?? Also the extra bulk of the 6x7 cameras is unappealing, and I don't want a rangefinder either- i.e Mamiya 7 II. Any advice??

You've covered about all the in's and out's of medium format. For landscape photography the 645 would be the better of the formats due to its rectangular shape which equates to less cropping. However, for still life and portraits you'd be better off with with 6x7. Both the 645 and 6x7 will produce excellent 20x30 enlargements.

The difference between 645 and 67 is significant. The flash sync of 1/30th is indeed limiting when wanting to take portraits. but it shouldn't be too much of a problem when it's on a sturdy tripod, and their are 2 leafshutter lenses availble for the Pentax 67II which will sync up to 1/500th so that should take care of it anyway.

The Pentax 645N syncs. at 1/60. Also, there are lenses available with leaf shutters which will sync. up to 1/500. Either 6x4.5 or 6x7 will give you great enlargements.
